Rugby Quebec's John Jones Scholarship deadline

La Fédération du rugby de Québec est à recevoir des applications pour la bourse d’études commémorative John Jones 2011. Le gagnant du concours se verra attribuer une bourse de 500$ pour subventionner son éducation postsecondaire. Toutes applications doivent être envoyées à scholarships@rugbyquebec.qc.ca avant le 23 septembre 2011. La bourse inaugurale sera décernée au gagnant du concours lors du tournoi de rugby à 7 John Jones le 1er octobre 2011 à Sainte-Julie. Les critères d’éligibilité peuvent être consultés en bas de page.
La bourse d’études commémorative John Jones a été créée en 2010 afin de rendre hommage au Dr John Jones. Le but de cette initiative est d’allouer une bourse annuelle contribuant à l’éducation postsecondaire d’un ou de plusieurs joueurs de rugby provenant du Québec. Les fonds, sous la tutelle de la Fondation Rugby Canada, serviront aux générations présentes et futures de poursuivre leurs objectifs scolaires.
Dr John Jones est une des grandes personnalités du rugby québécois. Quittant son terroir natif d’Australie pour le sol montréalais en 1964, John fait ses débuts en rugby avec les Montreal Irish. Un enseignant pour 31 ans au Collège Champlain (Saint-Lambert), John a su inspirer l’école d’une éthique rugbystique en inaugurant l’équipe masculine du Collège Champlain en 1979. Cinq ans plus tard, en 1984, John et deux anciens de Champlain ont formé le club de rugby des Locks de Saint-Lambert. En plus de son rôle de bâtisseur de ces deux clubs, John s’est vu responsable pour le tournoi national sous-19 masculin et féminin pour un certain temps. De plus, il fut la pierre angulaire des Quebec Combined Old Boys.
La Fédération tient à remercier tous ceux et celles ayant contribué au succès de cette bourse. Grâce à votre appui, l’héritage de cet homme d’éducation et de rugby continuera d’encourager nos générations futures. Ensuite inscrire le montant de votre don dans l’onglet “08: John Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund”. Les dons sont éligibles aux déductions d’impôt.
Nous vous encourageons tous et toutes de participer, en tant que clubs ou spectateurs, au premier tournoi à 7 John Jones le samedi 1er octobre au terrain des Montreal Irish. Le tournoi sert de levée de fonds pour la bourse John Jones.

Critères d’éligibilité :
1. Être inscrit à un programme à temps-plein (de premier ou deuxième niveau), de diplôme ou de certificat dans un collège (CEGEP) au Canada pour l’année en cours où bourse est allouée. Les étudiants inscrits au programme débutant en automne sont éligibles.
2. Provenant du Québec et impliqué au rugby en tant que joueur, arbitre ou administrateur.
3. Fournir une lettre de 250 mots décrivant les raisons pour lesquelles vous seriez un bon candidat pour la Bourse John Jones. Veuillez inclure vos contributions à la communauté du rugby, comment vous avez aidé à la promotion du rugby, autres actions de service à l’autrui, votre parcours scolaire et vos projets dans un futur rapproché.
4. Deux lettres de recommandation provenant de vos références fournies dans l’application. Une de celles-ci doit provenir de la communauté rugbystique.

Rugby Quebec is currently seeking applicants for the 2011 John Jones Memorial Scholarship. The recipient of the 2011 scholarship will receive a $500 bursary to help finance his/her post secondary education. Applications should be sent to scholarships@rugbyquebec.qc.ca, prior to September 23rd, 2011. The bursary will be presented to the successful applicant during the first annual John Jones Montreal Seven’s Tournament on October 1st, 2011 in St Julie. Eligibility requirements are listed below.
The John Jones Memorial Scholarship fund was created in 2010 to commemorate Dr. John Jones. The purpose of the fund is to provide an annual bursary for one or more Quebec based rugby players who are enrolled in a full time post-secondary program. The funds, held by the Canadian Rugby Foundation, will serve to provide current and future generations of Quebec rugby players assistance in pursuing their education.
Dr. John Jones was one of the great characters in Quebec rugby. Arriving in Montreal in 1964 from his native Australia, John began playing rugby for the Montreal Irish RFC. A teacher for 31 years at Champlain St Lambert, John brought his passion for rugby to the school and, in 1979, John founded St. Lambert’s Champlain College (Cegep) Men’s Rugby Team. Five years later in 1984 John, along with two former players, founded the St Lambert Locks. In addition to being a founding father of both Champlain College Rugby and the St Lambert Locks, for a time John also ran the under 19 men and women national championships in Canada, and was the “glue” for Quebec Combined Old Boys.
The FRQ would like to thank everyone who has helped ensure the success of the Scholarship fund. With your help John’s legacy as an educator and rugby man will continue for generations to come. Should you wish to make a first time contribution or if you contributed last year and would like to donate again in 2011, donations to the fund can be made online at www.canadianrugbyfoundation.ca, simply by clicking the “Donate” rugby ball. Next simply decide the amount you would like to donate and select “08: John Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund” in the Fund/Designation field. Donations are eligible for tax receipts.
In addition all teams are encouraged to attend the first annual John Jones Montreal Sevens Tournament on Saturday, October 1st, 2011 at the Montreal Irish grounds in Ste Julie which will benefit the John Jones Memorial Scholarship fund.

Eligibility
Candidates need to meet the following criteria to be considered for the bursary:
- Enrolled in a full-time degree (graduate or undergraduate), diploma or certificate program at a Canadian college (CEGEP) or university for the academic year commencing in the year in which the scholarship is granted. Students commencing their studies in the Fall are eligible;
- Be Quebec-based and actively involved and devoted to the game, either as a player, referee or administrator;
- Complete a letter, not more than 250 words, describing the reasons why you would be a worthy recipient of the John Jones Scholarship. Include your contributions to the rugby community, how you have helped expand the game, other volunteer activities, your academic achievements, your most important accomplishments and your future goals;
- Two letters of reference from two individuals named in your application. One must be someone who has been involved with you in the rugby community.
Unsuccessful applicants may reapply in a subsequent year.
