On behalf of the Canadian Rugby Foundation I would like to thank everyone for their support and generosity in 2011.

The James Bay Athletic Association celebrated their 125th anniversary on Saturday with a win against the University of Victoria Vikes to claim their 55th Barnard Cup victory (Vancouver Island Rugby Championship).

Later that evening , 125 olde stars, and some of today, squeezed into the navy and blue draped 125th Anniversary Lounge at the House of Bays, and sat down to a menu of fine food from jersey sponsor -The Local Kitchen, and fine companionship with rugby mates from many years.

The Canadian Rugby Foundation approved at its AGM on November 10th, 2011 the transfer of the employment contract of its Executive Director, Matthuw Ronald-Jones, to Rugby Canada to lead fundraising initiatives and to continue building on the momentum from Canada’s success at last month’s Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

The Canadian Rugby Foundation has become a key supporting partner of the TDSSAA Rugby 7’s Championship Series. The series is held by the Toronto District School Board. The Tournament has grown over 8 years to participation levels reaching 35 schools, totaling 70 teams in 5 boys and girls divisions, with more than 1100 athletes. This growth has lead to the recent Fully Sanctioned Sport status of Rugby 7’s in the TDSB.

Three years ago, eight members of Canada's Rugby World Cup squad were representing their country on a different stage, with the national under-20 program.

Rugby World Cup 2011 participants Matt Evans, Ryan Hamilton, Nathan Hirayama, Jamie Mackenzie, Mike Scholz, Andrew Tiedemann, Conor Trainor and Sean White were all members of Canada's 2008 under-20 side. Trainor was also a member of the 2009 side and White was the 2008 winner of the Stuart Pegg Award, voted by his teammates as the most valuable player on the field.

The Canadian Rugby Foundation has received numerous emails requesting more information on the game of rugby and a better understanding of the laws.  This interest is most definately the result of Canada's recent performance against Tonga at the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

Attached is a link to the International Rugby Board's "A Beginner's Guide to Rugby Union" which is a 16 page document outlining a basic overview of the game.

Thanks to the generosity of over two dozen donors from the USA and Canada, the Canadian Rugby Foundation's inaugural Aeroplan Donation program received over 465,000 Aeroplan Miles.  Donated Miles will be used to keep the cost of travel for the Canadian Rugby Foundation to a minimum and the remainder being used to support Canada's U20 men's and women's players and referees.

The Canadian Rugby Foundation and the Taaffe family are pleased to announce Lauren Nutt as this year’s recipient. Lauren is from Victoria, BC and was coached by Courtenay while at Stelly’s High School where she learned firsthand how passionate Courtney was for rugby and the community. Lauren now lives to those standards in memory of Courtenay.

The sport of rugby sevens is continuing to grow, both internationally and in Canada, as the sport is set to join the world stage at the 2016 Rio de Janiero Olympic games. The opportunity for a group of Under-18 men's players to participate in the Youth Commonwealth Games on the Isle of Man is another great chance to develop future potential Olympic-calibre athletes.

Such opportunities however, do come at a cost - previously in the form of a barrier to some participating athletes. This barrier for the 2011 Youth Commonwealth Games has been eliminated thanks to a tremendous contribution from the Canadian Rugby Foundation.
